Why Monitor Your Sleep
What can ongoing sleep monitoring reveal that a one-night sleep study may miss?
Sleep Monitoring vs Sleep Studies
A sleep study is designed to diagnose conditions such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and insomnia during a detailed clinical assessment, while ongoing sleep monitoring serves a different purpose. Tracking sleep at home over many nights can reveal normal night-to-night variation, the effects of stress, activity, alcohol, medications, bedroom conditions, and changes in sleep timing that a single laboratory night may not capture. It can also show longer-term patterns in breathing, oxygenation, and the interaction between sleep and chronic conditions such as COPD, heart disease, or diabetes. Sleep monitoring does not replace a diagnostic sleep study, but it can provide useful real-world context and help identify trends that deserve further discussion with a healthcare provider.
