Understanding Sleep Data

Why is hypoxic burden more useful than simply counting oxygen drops during sleep?

Why Hypoxic Burden Is Better Than Event Counts

Traditional sleep metrics often focus on how many breathing events or oxygen drops occur during the night, but event counts do not show how severe or prolonged those drops are. Hypoxic burden measures the total depth and duration of sleep-related oxygen loss, providing a clearer picture of the body’s overall exposure to low oxygen. Two people can have similar event counts while experiencing very different levels of physiological stress because one person’s desaturations may be deeper or last much longer. Tracking hypoxic burden alongside event-based measures can therefore provide more meaningful context when evaluating sleep apnea severity, cardiovascular strain, and whether treatment is improving overnight oxygen stability.
